Facade System made from Willow

Join us for a professional discussion and Friday beer at the Implement Materials exhibition. Meet Schmidt Hammer Lassen, MOOW and Staticus, who are behind the project "Willow Facade" and participate in the conversation about how a material like the locally grown and fast-growing willow can be used in prefabricated façade solutions with a specially developed aesthetic and technique.

How can we make more regenerative and locally available crops into attractive materials for construction? What architectural opportunities and challenges does this present? How do we work with traditionally known materials in a modern context, what can we learn from old craftsmanship techniques, and how do they work on a modern construction site?

These topics, and much more, are explored by four interdisciplinary teams consisting of architects, craftsmen, producers, and more, in the Implement Materials exhibition.

For six months, the teams have experimented with materials and developed building parts and components where CO2-light materials like hemp, straw, willow, and grass play a central role. Their work unfolds at different stages: from research on new products made from biological waste materials to refining a factory-produced façade system. All with a focus on architectural detailing as well as craftsmanship and industrial processing.

Shop talk Friday

We invite you to four shop talk Fridays, where the exhibiting teams will be joined by special guests who will comment on and provide perspectives on the displayed material solutions.

On this particular Friday, you can meet:

  • Helena Christensen, Susainability Manager,  Schmidt Hammer Lassen
  • Laura Craft, Head of Sustainability, Staticus
  • MOOW/Made Out of Willow
  • Eva Seo Andersen, Architect and MAS in Sustainable Leadership, founder of Spring Works.

The  project “Willow Facade” explores the use of willow in prefabricated façade systems, experimenting with the potential of willow in load-bearing elements, insulation, interior panels, acoustic panels, and façade cladding, where the architectural expression, material functionality, and aesthetics are combined in new ways. Willow often comes in small pieces, and the team is exploring a solution where the willow pieces are gathered and processed into a façade element that is both beautiful and easy to manage in construction.

  • How do the material properties translate into architectural detailing?
  • And what does it mean for both the designer and the builder when working with natural and perishable materials? For thinking in systems and designing for disasembly?
  • Does this point to new ways of thinking construction, where, for example, upkeep and replacement is part of the contractor’s “produsts as services,” and materials are recirculated through a leasing system?

The conversation will take place in English.

As a participant, you will also have plenty of opportunities to ask questions and contribute to the discussion. We will conclude with Friday beers and snacks.

NB. We will open the doors for the exhibition at 14:00. So, come early if you want to explore on your own before the conversation begins.

Part of a Larger Team

The entire team behind the “Willow Facade” is: Schmidt Hammer Lassen Architects, façade contractor Staticus,  PileByg and the design company “moow/made out of willow.

Part of a Larger Initiative

Implement Materials is part of the Agenda Earth initiative, which puts words and images to the built environment and landscapes of the future, exploring the regulatory frameworks that need to be put in place to make it possible. The initiative is led by the Danish Association of Architects and is continuously developed in collaboration with the Dreyers Fond and the Danish Bar Association, with support from Dreyers Fond.
