Open ideas competition: Iceland

The Nature and Health Association of Iceland (NLFí) in collaboration with the Association of Icelandic Architects (AÍ) is launching an open ideas competition for the restoration of the NLFI Rehabilitation and Health Clinic (HNLFÍ) and future developement plan for the area of the Nature and Health Association of Iceland in Hveragerði.

The Nature and Health Association of Iceland (NLFí) in collaboration with the Association of Icelandic Architects (AÍ) is launching an open ideas competition for the restoration of the NLFI Rehabilitation and Health Clinic (HNLFÍ) and future developement plan for the area of the Nature and Health Association of Iceland in Hveragerði where the operations of the NLFÍ Rehabilitation and Health Clinic are conducted. The competition is in accordance with this competition brief and valid competition rules of the Association of Icelandic Arhcitects.

Proposals for the comprehensive plan for the area are requested, as well as internal planning of the buildings of NLFÍ Rehabilitation and Health Clinic as well as proposals for building phases for future development. it is anticipated that a detail planning proposal will be made at a later date, based on the decision of the jury. It is the wish of the NLFÍ that the land should be utilized in the most practical was, as future expansion is envisioned.

It is proposed to increase the number of operational units in the area and to renew existing buildings as appropriate. The competition area is about 16 ha, but the size of the current real estate is about 12.000 m2.

Two question periods are in the competition, the former ends on January 27 and the latter on March 12. It should be pointed out that this competition is electronic.

The deadline for submitting proposals is April 22 before 16:00 (GMT)

The competition is an open ideas competition according to the definition of the Association of Icelandic Architects (AÍ) and open to all those who fulfill the requirements of the competition brief, according to article 3.1. The client is first and foremost looking for basic ideas for solving both the overall plan of the area as well as the organization of each operational unit.

The jury consists of

Nominated by the client:
1. Ingi Þór Jónsson, chairman of the jury. Marketing director NLFI Rehabilitation and Health Clinic (HNLFÍ) and board member of the Nature and Health Association of Iceland (NLFÍ).
2. Hrafnhildur Ólafsdóttir, architect ARB, RIBA, JCA in London.
3. Guðmundur F. Baldursson, Head of Planning of Hveragerðisbær.

Nominated by the Association of Icelandic Architects (AÍ):
▪ Baldur Ó. Svavarsson, architect FAÍ, Úti/Inni architects
▪ Sigríður Sigþórsdóttir, architect FAÍ, Basalt architects

On-site visit: A site inspection will be offered by the client at the competition site on January 22, 2020. A walk around the area and existing buildings viewed. The on-site visit starts punctually at 13:00 and is scheduled to end at 15:00. Meeting is at the main entrance to the Nature Health Association of Iceland (NLFÍ) next to the swimming pool. Margrét Grímsdóttir, Director of Nursing, will conduct the on-site visit. Participants are invited to lunch at 12:00 in the dining room of NLFÍ (optional). It should be noted that the on-site visit is not intended for questions, see the deadlines for questions under key dates.

The competition takes place in collaboration with the Association of Icelandic Architects (AÍ).
