“The first principle of The Copenhagen Lessons, an outcome of the UIA World Congress in Copenhagen, declares, ‘There Is no Beauty in Exclusion.’ How do we in the field of the built environment recognise the tools we have to create more inclusive spaces? Who has not been included, and how do we ensure that architecture provides inclusivity for the present and future society, especially as schools experience an increasing number of students diagnosed in the spectrum of neurodiversity, for example ADHD, autism etc.?
At this diversity event, we have invited a series of architects working with inclusive design to deliver three short inspirational talks attending the questions above. Afterwards there will be an open discussion and lots of opportunity to engage in conversations with professional colleagues you may not have met yet.
Meet architect Cora Valloire, a master in universal design who has embarked on a journey of independent work dedicated to creating more inclusive buildings and public spaces. Cora will provide insights into the essential tools of universal design.
Lotte Rønne and Marie-Louise Holst, founding partners of the architectural firm MATTERS, have dedicated the last 8 years to researching and designing the physical spaces in schools for students with special needs. They leverage their knowledge and experiences not only in the realm of special education but also in their work with public schools. During the event, they will provide insights into their findings and design approach.
Also, meet Eva Gjessing Maa and Ph.D. fellow at AU, Arts. Eva has researched the architectural briefs of recent school buildings, and the teachers practices with the built school architecture. Her findings reveal that what in the briefs is outspoken to be inclusive school design might, in fact, end up with exclusive teaching practices. Eva will present key findings and challenge our perception of what defines inclusive school architecture.
